  • This is to inform you all that again the college has started playing games with the students of IIIT. Recently the students which are staying in college write now are being forced to evacuate the hostels within a day and have been asked to return after 15 days, i,e 15th june. Mess has already been closed. Today Vijay chaurasiya sir, the warden of Boys hostel 3 came to remind to students. There has been no official mail regarding this. There is just a notice ( no office order ) on the board along with the warden's signatures.

When we asked vijay chaurisiya sir about the same, he replied that he cannot do anything and "Upar se orders hain, maintenance ke liye khaali karna hai". No written reason has been given by any means, stating why students are being asked to vacate the hostels anywhere neither through any mail nor in the notice.
Many of the M.Tech people are doing their thesis. Final year students are preparing for the upcoming placements and also for GRE,CAT,IAS exams and have joined various coaching’s.
Students also pay for complete 6 months and have full right to stay here and its generally this way every year. How can one force us to leave the college on a one day notice. No reservations are there. Moreover question arises why we should leave?

The sole answer that is looking probable is that The Committee members would be visiting the college very soon for the investigation and that's why we are being asked to evacuate. If seems that they are forcing us to send us back to our homes just for the sake that none of the students could get to meet the committee.

No one wants to vacate the hostel, all have their own reason of staying here. Students cannot be forced to vacate without any reason and moreover they are living here rightfully and they shall.

P.S Hereby I have attached the snap of the 'Notice'.( Not office orders ).

Memorandum of demands from the students of IIIT Allahabad( modified)

  • Thursday, 5 May 2011

  • The student community of IIIT Allahabad proposes the following set of demands to the Board of Governors of IIIT Allahabad:

    1.      The student community has lost its confidence in the leadership of the Director Dr. M.D. Tiwari and under his directorship we do not feel safe, neither in practicing our right to ‘Freedom of expression’ nor academically. Thus we demand that our director should be changed and a new director should be appointed in light of the following facts:
    a.      For over 12 years now the Naini campus is still being used to house the first year students of the B.Tech programme at IIIT Allahabad. The administration has failed to provide regular accommodation for first year students at the main campus while at the same time ample land and development funds have been available with the institute and have not been utilized as envisaged. Further, minimal facilities are available at the Naini campus and recently Akshay Tyagi died at the Naini campus and could not be rushed to any medical assistance as the Naini campus has no medical facility and is 19km away from the main Allahabad city.
    b.      Dr. M.D. Tiwari has consistently used his position to harass the faculty and staff of IIIT Allahabad. In recent years, the institute has seen a steady exodus of faculty members and false charges were slapped against Dr. U.S. Tiwary (former Dean Academics of the Institute) to force him to leave the Institute.
    c.      Under Dr. M.D. Tiwari’s tenure students have regularly faced the brunt of summary fines and dictatorial actions. In a recent incident, students were fined Rs. 1000 per person for taking a leave on the festival of Rakshabandhan. Such actions from the administration are the order of the day at IIIT Allahabad.
    d.   It is pertinent to mention that the director informed the entire student community present at Akshya’s condolence that his family was offered a sum of 50 lac rupees. This turned out to be a false information.
    2.      As promised earlier by the Director of IIITA himself, a sum of Rs. 10 lakhs should be awarded as compensation for the family of the deceased student – Akshay Tyagi. Further, employment for the family member of the deceased and other scholarships in his name should also be instituted.
    3.      The Naini hostel should be withdrawn from service with immediate effect and all first year students should be accommodated into the main campus at Jhalwa promptly. The Naini campus offers no utility value to the Institute or to the students and it makes no sense whatsoever for 250 students to travel 19 km to and fro daily for their regular classes.
    4.      An ambulance with emergency medical services should be pressed into 24-hour service at all campuses of IIIT Allahabad with immediate effect. Further, proper medical staff should be hired and services at medical centers of the Institute should be upgraded as soon as possible
    5.      Transparency should be observed in the awarding of mess contracts and students should be involved in the running of messes at hostels. Food poisoning and other complaint cases have been a regular feature at IIITA hostel messes and therefore mess contracts should be scrutinized and cancelled when appropriate quality standards are not adhered to.
    6.      Even after 12 years of its inception IIIT Allahabad does not have a student Gymkhana or any independent student body. We demand that a Student Gymkhana be constituted with immediate effect to effectively raise student interests and demands with the administration as necessary.

  • Widespread support in Capital

IIIT A students and alumni held candle light march at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 10th April. It was part of the ongoing peaceful protests against the corrupt practices of Dr MD Tiwari (Director, IIIT A), which has most recently led to the death of Akshya Tyagi, a student of first year at the institute. Around 120 people attended the protest which was held from 7 to 9 pm on Sunday evening.
Apart from IIIT fraternity in NCR, protest also caught the fancy of other social activists in capital. Students from JNU and IIT Delhi joined hands in demanding Director's resignation and an end to corruption in Indian academics.

    M.D. Tiwari must go NOW

  • by
  • iiita protests
  • For the last 12 years, M.D. Tiwari has held the reins of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. He has "ruled" the institute as a tyrannical dictator ruling a country, keeping the citizens quite by terrorizing them.  The director of an educational institute of IIITA's stature needs to be a progressive academician who works with the students and the faculty to find ways to spur creativity and innovation at the institute. M.D. Tiwari (MDT), on the other hand, does the exact opposite of that. He is a politician. All he really cares about is power and keeping his post as the director for as long as possible and he will go to any lengths to make it happen.

    Epitome of Nepotism
He has created a whole ecosystem in the college administration consisting mostly of his relatives or his relatives' relatives. The peons, the clerks, the Deputy Finance Officer, the Assistant Registrar - all of them apparently "personally know Tiwari sir". If you get on any of their bad side, if you try to say no to their tyrannical decisions, they would go and have a chat with "Tiwari sir" and get you suspended/rusticated. This is the kind of threats that we heard from pretty much everyone in the administration for 4 years of our time at IIITA. And the same continues today. IIITA's administrative department is the epitome of nepotism. The whole institute is run by Tiwari and his family members and the whole ecosystem is so strongly bound together that there is no way an erring officer can be punished for his wrongdoings. His/her boss and their bosses are all in it together. Everyone is scratching each others' back and siphoning off shitloads of money while they are at it.

    The Scaremongering
M.D. Tiwari's "leadership" style has always completely been based on terrorizing the students or anyone else who demands change. Basic human rights like freedom of speech are taken away from the students as soon as they enter this "temple of education". Students have to be very careful about what they say and to whom they say it because their statements may immediately lead to their suspension or dismissal from the institute. The fact that all of the interview videos from the recent protests at IIITA show the students with faces completely covered just goes to show the amount of fear that Tiwari has been able to instill in their minds. College is a place where you learn to question everything. 'Questioning everything' is how you learn science, and it is how you learn about various social issues of the day. This is how you develop as a socially responsible human being. What is mind boggling to me is that the head honcho of an education institute of IIITA's stature would actually adopt the practice of physically punishing the students if they tried to question his ways. There have been countless number of times that the students of the institute have seen their colleagues been physically beaten up by the director on the premise of "disciplining" them. There are accounts of students getting beaten up for not attending classes or just for walking down the street holding each other's hand.
Although he might try to create an image of someone who deeply cares about the students in front of the media, students are the least important item in his priority list which is topped by money and power. Evidently, in the light of current protests, the students were banned from drinking water from any of the institute's water fountains after protesting all day long peacefully in scorching heat. This is how much he cares about the students and their well being.

    Time to go
There comes a time in every dictator's life when the people under his rule get severely overwhelmed by the tyranny, and revolt. Tiwari is no less than a dictator himself and he considers IIITA to be his mini-Egypt where he can rule for eternity without getting challenged. Evidently, he even got his age reduced by four years just to be able to keep his post and not retire (See related article here: http://tinyurl.com/3l9leyn). I have news for you, Mr. Tiwari - your time has come. Your tyranny has cost too many innocent students their lives. How can you have these deaths on your conscience and still keep going? You may like to think that you are helping students by snubbing their protests and their questions but all you have been doing all this while is scaring them to fall in and conform to the tyrannical rules made at your whim. The students and the alumni stand together on this today - be it in front of the administrative building, or at the India Gate in Delhi, or in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Seattle, California, or wherever they are - we all stand together and demand your resignation. It's time for you to go.
