IIIT Students Protest at Jantar Mantar, N.Delhi

Widespread support in Capital

IIIT A students and alumni held candle light march at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 10th April. It was part of the ongoing peaceful protests against the corrupt practices of Dr MD Tiwari (Director, IIIT A), which has most recently led to the death of Akshya Tyagi, a student of first year at the institute. Around 120 people attended the protest which was held from 7 to 9 pm on Sunday evening.
Apart from IIIT fraternity in NCR, protest also caught the fancy of other social activists in capital. Students from JNU and IIT Delhi joined hands in demanding Director's resignation and an end to corruption in Indian academics.

M.D. Tiwari must go NOW

For the last 12 years, M.D. Tiwari has held the reins of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. He has "ruled" the institute as a tyrannical dictator ruling a country, keeping the citizens quite by terrorizing them.  The director of an educational institute of IIITA's stature needs to be a progressive academician who works with the students and the faculty to find ways to spur creativity and innovation at the institute. M.D. Tiwari (MDT), on the other hand, does the exact opposite of that. He is a politician. All he really cares about is power and keeping his post as the director for as long as possible and he will go to any lengths to make it happen.

Epitome of Nepotism
He has created a whole ecosystem in the college administration consisting mostly of his relatives or his relatives' relatives. The peons, the clerks, the Deputy Finance Officer, the Assistant Registrar - all of them apparently "personally know Tiwari sir". If you get on any of their bad side, if you try to say no to their tyrannical decisions, they would go and have a chat with "Tiwari sir" and get you suspended/rusticated. This is the kind of threats that we heard from pretty much everyone in the administration for 4 years of our time at IIITA. And the same continues today. IIITA's administrative department is the epitome of nepotism. The whole institute is run by Tiwari and his family members and the whole ecosystem is so strongly bound together that there is no way an erring officer can be punished for his wrongdoings. His/her boss and their bosses are all in it together. Everyone is scratching each others' back and siphoning off shitloads of money while they are at it.

The Scaremongering
M.D. Tiwari's "leadership" style has always completely been based on terrorizing the students or anyone else who demands change. Basic human rights like freedom of speech are taken away from the students as soon as they enter this "temple of education". Students have to be very careful about what they say and to whom they say it because their statements may immediately lead to their suspension or dismissal from the institute. The fact that all of the interview videos from the recent protests at IIITA show the students with faces completely covered just goes to show the amount of fear that Tiwari has been able to instill in their minds. College is a place where you learn to question everything. 'Questioning everything' is how you learn science, and it is how you learn about various social issues of the day. This is how you develop as a socially responsible human being. What is mind boggling to me is that the head honcho of an education institute of IIITA's stature would actually adopt the practice of physically punishing the students if they tried to question his ways. There have been countless number of times that the students of the institute have seen their colleagues been physically beaten up by the director on the premise of "disciplining" them. There are accounts of students getting beaten up for not attending classes or just for walking down the street holding each other's hand.
Although he might try to create an image of someone who deeply cares about the students in front of the media, students are the least important item in his priority list which is topped by money and power. Evidently, in the light of current protests, the students were banned from drinking water from any of the institute's water fountains after protesting all day long peacefully in scorching heat. This is how much he cares about the students and their well being.

Time to go
There comes a time in every dictator's life when the people under his rule get severely overwhelmed by the tyranny, and revolt. Tiwari is no less than a dictator himself and he considers IIITA to be his mini-Egypt where he can rule for eternity without getting challenged. Evidently, he even got his age reduced by four years just to be able to keep his post and not retire (See related article here: http://tinyurl.com/3l9leyn). I have news for you, Mr. Tiwari - your time has come. Your tyranny has cost too many innocent students their lives. How can you have these deaths on your conscience and still keep going? You may like to think that you are helping students by snubbing their protests and their questions but all you have been doing all this while is scaring them to fall in and conform to the tyrannical rules made at your whim. The students and the alumni stand together on this today - be it in front of the administrative building, or at the India Gate in Delhi, or in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Seattle, California, or wherever they are - we all stand together and demand your resignation. It's time for you to go.

The situation is getting worse by the day in IIIT-A.

Day 5, 04-04-11 Started on similar lines as the last four days. The students inside the campus are being denied basic amenities, the washrooms, canteen, mess are still closed. The ones outside the campus are not allowed inside but the ones inside are free to go out only to break the unity among the students and weaken the movement, which has been the main motive of the college administration ever since the protest has begun. Inspite of all the threats, intimidation and inconsiderate attitude from the admin, the determined students refused to relent to their wishes and are still peacefully protesting inside the campus. Many of the students who have been denied entry inside the campus continue to provide support by staying outside the college gate in the scorching sun and refusing to move an inch from there.

In the meanwhile, as per the warning by the college administration in an official order on the previous day to vacate the hostels, soon after 10 am in the morning, the warden and other officials are raiding the boys hostel and are forcibly vacating and locking them down. Even this could not deter the motivated students and they started protesting by sitting outside the hostel gates devoid of water, electricity and food.

All this effort on the part of students has finally taken it’s toll on some of them and their heath is being affected severely. The complete dictatorship and insensitive behavior of the college admin is evident from the fact that no health facility in terms of ambulance/doctor is provided for the students. The mess in the boys hostel is closed and no provision for food is there for hundreds of students inside or outside the campus. The alumni continue to offer their full support many of whom are already here and protesting along with the students.

DAY 4 of protest: 3/04/2011

The torturous attitude of the institute continued for the fourth consecutive day.
Candle march
A peaceful candle march was observed inside the campus at 6pm and in extension to this ,the candle march also took place in different cities including Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad by the college alumni and the students fraternity at the same time. Shame on their mercilessness because  the college administration didn’t even let every student to be part of this march. They debarred some students from entering the institute due to which they couldn’t be the part of march inside, so they sat outside the college main gate and showed their support from there.

Faculty among students
The institute left no stone unturned in their attempt to crush this protest. The administration sent all the faculties  to have a talk with the students as  a part of their divide and rule policy. The faculties had only the word of the administration  and urged the students  to step back.

Administration indifference ….
The students remained firm on their stand in spite of the rain that continued after noon.
The student were denied the basic amenities including water, sanitary facilities
The TOP NOTCH students PART OF THE BEST IT COLLEGE OF INDIA were seen SWEEPING the floor to make some space on ground to sleep.

They faced the ruthless administration with a invigorated spirit appended with  a hungry stomach as the college closed down both the campus canteen.

Administration felt no hinge of shame as they forced a final office order stating sine die had been implemented in the college and the hostel area which gave 10 am time the next morning as the ultimatum for students to vacate the hostel

Acknowledging the inhumane behavior from the college front, students from other colleges of the city including  MNNIT Allahabad extended their whole hearted support to the IIIT students .

Devoid of all the ground level facilities including food and water, few students fainted while their relentless protest; but the hostile administration moved not an inch to aid these troubled ones with any medical aid. The college medical center remains close .
INSPITE OF ALL THE ATROCITIES AND HEINOUS WAYS TAKEN BY THE ADMINISTRATION ...............WE FOLLOW ONLY ONE WAY -GANDHIGIRI

DAY 3 happenings:

Peaceful protest continued for the third day, with students continually sitting in front of admin block, initially devoid of even basic facilities, in very harsh weather. Later office issued orders to restore facilities of hostels, messes, etc despite sine dine being imposed.
Harassment of girls
Girls were threatened and were forced to leave the hostel despite of the fact that the use of basic facilities were regranted by the institution.
Police withdrawal
Most of the police officials were withdrawn back from the iiit campus but still a few remained to ensure the peace and law order.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Media supported the cause by taking continuous interviews, and presenting the correct pictures.
INTERNET
All internet facilities were suspended throughout the day. Institute e mail ids hve been disabled as well.
BOARD MEETING CANCELLED
A meeting of board of directors scheduled for today, to look into the matter, was called off.
The convocation was postponed indefinitely as well.
COLLEGE TRYING TO CRUSH THE MOVEMENT
Management officials along with large number of policemen came at 3 am in the morning and tried to collect the names of the  students who were peacefully sleeping outside the admin building. They threatened that the collection of names was for the purpose of filing FIR, which if happens would spoil the careers of the students. By the way one of the management personnel was talking, it seemed that he was probably drunk and was not in his correct mind.
A constant watch was maintained by the management officials from within the admin building and they are trying to mark faces. Also phone calls are being made to homes of students asking parents to call back their wards.

We would like to bring to the light the fact that despite all the problems and threatening, the unity among the students continues and everyone played their part at the fullest. Food and water supplies were maintained by the students at the peace protest site. Students braved the harsh weather  to continuously maintain presence at the site.

Update on 02/04/2011

SOURCE : ON CAMPUS STUDENTS !!

Update on 02/04/2011 -
Yesterday, the students were blatantly lied to on their faces by the director about the fine they had paid which was wrongly imposed upon us in lieu of going home during Rakhsa Bandhan. The Director denied that he had imposed any such fine, but the students do have the recepit and the official mails and the documents which were sent to them, these prove that this fine amount was given, atleast in the order of lacs to the institute.

Another development was that yesterday night, the riot police were called to intimidate the students  by false claims of application of section 144 IPC.

Yesterday night, the Dean of Student Affairs at our college, Mr. R.C.Tripathi announced in front of all the students and the authorities present that an office order to the effect that Sine Die has been declared in the institution. But this has obviously not been implemented as the college bus service was working in the morning, and college officials were reported coming to the college. It seems as if the college is functioning only without any academic activities of any kind.

The students are also not being allowed in the campus, where around 280 of our fellow students are still there. The girls hostels in the campus have been shut down and the students have nowhere to go.

The 280 students in the main campus have not been given any food supplies and have not consumed anything since a span of atleast 10 hours. Their resources are almost nil and we are not being allowed to give them even food to eat. Are they not humans? Do they not have basic human rights?
